About RootsMove

Designing a solution that is effective, practical and sustainable.

RootsMove was established in 2022 by Thelma Ndaula and Grace Burgess with a clear aim -  to provide financial support to refugees recently granted leave to remain in the UK and thus are required to leave Home Office accommodation.

Background

In the UK, asylum seekers often spend years in the asylum system waiting for a decision on their case. As an asylum seeker, you are not allowed to work for the first year of your claim, and if you are granted the right to work, it is hard to find an employer who will take you on. Asylum seekers are given just £37/week to live on.

As a result, most asylum seekers are unable to save money. When they are granted their LTR, they are given just 28 days to leave Home Office accommodation. Without a job or state benefits (which take weeks to secure), many refugees are left homeless within a month of receiving their refugee status.

RootsMove seeks to prevent refugees becoming homeless at this stage by facilitating the provision of funding, access to specialist advice and wraparound support.

Our work

In 2024, RootsMove launched a pilot programme with RefuAid to support refugee households to settle into new homes.

Meet the Team

Directors

  • Grace Burgess (she/her)

    CO-DIRECTOR

Grace is one of the co-directors of RootsMove. Back in 2021 whilst at TimePeace, Grace recognised there were acute housing challenges for refugees in the UK and limited housing support services. Grace believes that housing is a basic human right, but in our current system in the UK, homes are treated as a mechanism for profit. She works to disrupt this and restore housing justice and dignity through her work at RootsMove and in her other role at Quaker Housing Trust.

Alongside this work, Grace enjoys learning languages (currently British Sign Language and Russian) and being outdoors in nature.

  • Thelma Ndaula

    CO-DIRECTOR

Thelma is a passionate community leader, advocate, and strategist working at the heart of refugees in the UK. As Co-Director of RootsMove, she supports newly granted refugees to access safe housing, rebuild their lives, and feel a sense of belonging from day one.

She is also the CEO of Say It Loud Club, a grassroots organisation championing the rights of LGBTQ+ refugees. Across both roles, Thelma brings a strong commitment to peer-led support, equity, and culturally responsive leadership.

With a background in grassroots organising and coalition-building, Thelma leads powerful advocacy and campaigns that give voice to lived experience with over a decade working to influence policymakers and challenge systems that fail marginalised communities. Her approach is bold, compassionate, and rooted in the belief that everyone deserves safety, dignity, and the freedom to thrive.
